Architectural conception

To create a harmonious educational environment, we studied the experience of best world schools and held an international contest, in which 30 architectural bureaus with the experience of constructing unique educational buildings participated. Among those who assessed the projects were the chief architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov and the architecture critic Grigoriy Revzin.
The project by Dutch bureau Atelier Pro, whose portfolio already contains dozens of schools around the world, was acknowledged as the best one. The architectural workshop Atrium became the main designer of the project.
In December 2016, after the beginning of the construction, the project of Letovo School campus achieved the reward of Moscow Architectural Council in the nomination ‘Best architectural and town planning solution for an object ofeducation and medicine’. The winners were defined by the professional council, which included leading Moscow architects, heads of largest project bureaus and international experts.

Space arrangement

The territory and the school building are parts of the united educational environment. All space is set with the aim to arouse an interest in education and a willing to learn.
Leading principles of arranging educational spaces are at the basis of the project.
Symmetry
Our campus from the inside is both large and small at the same time. On the one hand, it is large as it is situated on the vast territory and includes a great number of educational spaces. On the other hand, it is small because everything is within reach here: all premises are open, accessible and are in balance to students’needs. There aren’t any infinite corridors and empty halls; the building is made up of various educational spaces where everyone can find a comfortable place for studies and leisure.
Flexibility
We shift from a typical space arrangement to a more flexible and individualised one. Instead of corridors there are recreation areas and zones for small groups’classes. One can learn not only in a classroom: we have reading areas, conference rooms with round tables for project work, rooms for individual classes and several library halls. Classes may be combined into lecture or examinations halls; if needed, a multi-layered atrium turns into a theatre hall for 1000 people, a lecture hall or a school recreation room. When the necessities change, the environment changes as well.
Rich possibilities
There is everything within the campus for all kinds of educational activities, students’ initiatives and comfortable diverse leisure. Learners can play football on outdoor sports grounds and they can take up botany in a school greenhouse. They create a plane model in a design studio, participate in school theatre performances, invite a famous writer in the library’s winter garden, hold debates in the amphitheatre, attend open-air classes and relax in the student centre — all this without leaving the campus.
Accessibility
Day school students arrive at Letovo School entrance by school buses from nearest metro stations — Salaryevo, Tepliy Stan and Buninskaya Alleya. There is a parking lot on campus for those parents who bring their children by car. Specialneeds students feel comfortable at Letovo School as we have taken into consideration the requirements to schools with inclusive education.
Safety
The space within the campus is open: most of the walls and doors are transparent. We thought over the architecture in detail so that to get rid of all gridlocks and dark zones. This allows both teachers and students to be in the course of what and where takes place at school. Students enter the building through the electronic access system and their movements are registered in a special electronic journal. Teachers, tutors and other personnel are always aware of where the students are. There is a twenty-four-hour security on campus, closed-circuit television cameras and other technologies, with the help of which the territory can be controlled without intervening into educational process and leisure.
